When people ask what I do? I'm hesitant to use the word Doula because there are so many misconceptions about Doula's, each Doula is different and has their own unique way of supporting women in labour, birth and beyond.
A positive birth does not mean all natural and unmedicated, it does not matter if you have a caesarean birth, birth with epidural, birth induction, vbac birth, water birth, breech birth, even if it's an emergency caesarean birth, which is often seen as the most traumatic, all these births have the potential to be positive with the right frame of mind and most importantly an amazing support team.
"A positive birth is a birth in which a women feels she has the freedom of choice, access to accurate information and that she is in control, powerful and respected".
All of these things can be achieved in any type of birth.
Be informed, be prepared, communicate your wishes and choose your support system.
